“What’s the funkiest band around at the moment? Robert Glasper, say the terminally hip, but there’s less bombast and sharper tunes to be had from the trumpeter Theo Croker, grandson of the elegant, much-missed horn player Doc Cheatham. Late-period Miles is a clear influence, but Croker has a vision of his own. Melody Gardot fans won’t need any persuading, either, about the virtues of Irwin Hall’s sax. Love From The Sun is slightly woolly, but don’t be detereed by the mystical accoutrements: these musicians can set a bandstand on fire.” CD
